BHC Press Releases

January 9, 2012 - St. Louis County Health Department releases the first edition of their newsletter, CPPW News, featuring BHC member company Schnucks and their participation in the BHC tobacco cessation classes. 

September 6, 2010 - New BHC report finds most leading St. Louis employers already provide coverage for vaccinations as mandated by recent health reforms.

May 17, 2010 - New BHC report finds the majority of St. Louis hospitals scored poorly on a government tool developed to screen hospital claims for preventable complications and adverse events.

Health Literacy

The journal Health Affairs has released a new report on health literacy that concludes “the promises of medical research, health information technology, and advances in health care coverage and delivery cannot be realized if our nation does not simultaneously address the challenge of limited health literacy.” According to the report, tens of millions of Americans have limited health literacy—a health issue, that the authors say, if properly addressed, can support preventive and patient-centered care, thus reducing the length and severity of episodes of crisis care. Read the full article.


Health Reform

According to a Harris Interactive/HealthDay poll released today certain parts of the health care reform law are slowly growing in popularity among Americans. Examples include a growth in support for increasing the age limit for dependent children and preventing insurance providers from denying coverage for preexisting conditions. Read the full article.


Infections

Read Jim Doyle's coverage of area hospitals' infection rates, Missouri's lack of historical information on these rates, how his coverage resulted in the state's changing its policies.

The Post-Dispatch Editorial Board reinforced Mr. Doyle's coverage by calling for even greater transparency and support for removal of BJC HealthCare's restrictive contract language that prevents patients from accessing the information they need to be educated health care consumers.
